2019-2020 Commuter Hostel
With weekday traffic and unpredictable weather conditions, getting to campus early and leaving classes late in the evening can be an added daily stress. McMaster University’s Commuter Hostel offers non-residence students short-term overnight stays to make it easier to get to those early morning classes or stay overnight when you have a late finish and an early next-day start.
Non-residence Undergraduate, Graduate, and PhD students will have the opportunity to book overnight stays in residence, extending from 1 to 15 nights. Check-in is at 5 p.m. and check-out is 11 a.m.

Commuter Hostel accommodations are found on the first floor of Brandon Hall Residence, located in the North Quad adjacent from the Commons Building.
All guests will stay in a private bedroom with twin bed with access to communal all-gender washrooms located nearby. Guests will receive keys and access card at check-in. Clean linens, towels, washcloths, and toiletries will be in waiting for you in room.
Please note that parking is not included in the flat rate.
Reservations (Closed for 2019-2020 Season)
Reservations can be made at the Commons Service Centre or online.
To get discounted rates, please ensure you book your whole stay ahead of time. For example, if you would like to stay 7 days at the discounted rate, you need to select 7 days at the time of booking. Discounts cannot be applied to stays that are extended after the initial booking.
To book online:
- Go to our online booking tool
- Log in using your MacID.
- Using the StarRez Self-Selection tool, choose the room you would like to book.
- Once you have selected a room and agreed to the booking policies, you will pre-pay online using a credit card through Moneris.
- After you have made your payment, the room will be reserved to you automatically and you will receive a confirmation email with:
- Check-in information
- Your check-in barcode
- Commuter Hostel Rules and Expectations

Check-in is at 5:00 p.m. the evening of your booking.
To check-in, simply head to the Commons Service Centre in the Commons Building. Staff will ask for the barcode you received when booking your room or your student ID number.
At check-in, you will receive your keys, and access card.
In your room will be a tote containing:
- Bed linens – fitted sheet, flat sheet, blanket and comforter
- 2 bath towels
- 2 hand towels
- 2 washcloths
- 1 shampoo
- 1 conditioner
- 1 bar of soap
- Clear plastic bag for dirty linens
Please note: if you do not show up to check-in, you will receive a reminder email to check-in at the Commons Service Centre.
If you do not show up to check-in on the evening of your reservation, you will forfeit your prepaid night as per the Non-Refundable Cancellation policy.
Check-out is at 11:00 a.m. the morning after your booking.
To check-out, return your keys, and access card to the Commons Service Centre. Once you are checked out, you will receive a confirmation email. Please leave your dirty linens in your room in the supplied clear plastic bag.
Please remember that you may check-out earlier than your designated date/time, however you will not be provided with a refund as per the Non-Refundable Cancellation policy.
Please note: If you do not check out by your check out date/time:
- You will receive an automatic email from StarRez indicating that your check-out date/time has passed.
- A Late Move-Out fine of $50 will be applied to your student account
- A lock change charge ($200+) will be applied to your student account and your belongings will be removed from residence.
During Your Stay
The Commuter Hostel has a no guest policy. Booked rooms will be reserved for only the booking student.
Commuter Hostel guests are responsible for the waste in their guest room. You may dispose of any waste in the common room.
If you would like to exchange your linens/towels, please pack your linens/towels into the provided clear plastic bag, place that into your provided laundry tote, and bring the bag to the Commons Service Centre to exchange for fresh linens/towels.
For guests staying 1-5 nights, there is no linen exchange. Towel exchange service is provided as needed.
Guests staying for 6 or more nights will have weekly linen and towel exchanges at the Commons Service Centre.
